WVNS in Beckley, Bluefield, Lewisburg, West Virginia is looking for a Sports Anchor / MMJ to cover a wide variety of sports in the Mountain State.   From local high school sports such as Friday night football to the PGA Tournament – A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier, formerly known as the Greenbrier Classic, minor league baseball, and even NFL training camps held at the historic Greenbrier Resort. 

We’re looking for someone whose knowledge of sports is far reaching and varied.  We are looking for someone who can tell inspiring stories from the sports field as well as call highlights from local rival football games.   This position puts you in the role of being in charge of your own department.   You are the anchor, the reporter, everything.   You will need to be an active member of the community and be fully immersed in the culture of southern West Virginia.   You’ll live in a community full of good, friendly people who want to help you succeed.   When you succeed, the station succeeds, so that is our goal.   If you are ready to come to a station where you can tell great stories, work with a great team, please apply.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Produces and presents sports reports for all platforms.
  2. Ensures that all sports content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
  3. Writes and delivers sports stories in a clear and concise manner.
  4. Assists in writing, copy editing, researching and coordinating sports programming and other content.
  5. Responds to breaking sports events and other urgent newsrooms situations as required.
  6. Works closely with staff to develop comprehensive sports coverage.
  7. Participates in promotional activities including public appearances.
  8. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
  9. Shoots video for sports reports.
  10. Sets up, composes and executes video shots.
  11. Maintains video equipment.
  12. Edits video clips for television broadcasts and eMedia content.
  13. Writes stories for the website and other eMedia platforms.
  14. Interacts with viewers and users on social media sites.

Work experience and education required for position:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work related experience.
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of sports and sports related activities.
  3. Minimum five years’ experience in sports reporting or anchoring. (More or less depending on market size.)
  4. Superior on-air presence.
  5. Experience guiding, directing and motivating others.
  6. Ability to identify the developmental needs of others and to coach, mentor or otherwise help others to improve their knowledge or skills.
  7. Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.
  8. Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  9. Ability to effectively listen to fully understand problems and communicate with a team to shape a solution.
  10. Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  11. Flexibility to work any shift.

Special Skills Required:

  1. Fluency in English.
  2. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required.
