NAB MARCONI RADIO AWARD PRESENTED TO WVAQ-FM

WVAQ-FM Morgantown, WV was named CHR Station of the Year at the 2007 National Association of Broadcasters' Marconi Radio Awards. The awards were announced Thursday night at the annual NAB Marconi Radio Awards Dinner & Show held at The NAB Radio Show in Charlotte.

The prestigious awards recognized radio's outstanding personalities and stations in 21 categories. An independent task force of broadcasters selected the finalists and ballots were sent to members of the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Selection Academy in August. The ballots were tabulated by an independent accounting firm.

Rahall and Moore-Capito co-sponsor Resolution in Opposition to Performance Tax

As you are aware, the recording industry is asking congress to support creation of a new performance “right” that would require local broadcasters to pay for the use of recordings when aired on the radio.  No matter what terms they use, this would be a new TAX!
 
For many years, the record labels and performers have prospered greatly from the free airplay given by local broadcasters.  Through this airplay, the recording industry has enjoyed increased popularity, visibility and record sales.

LPFM bill approved by Senate Commerce Committee 10-30-07

This afternoon, the Senate Commerce Committee approved S.1675, the Local Community Radio Act of 2007. The bill, introduced by Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and John McCain (R-AZ), would allow low power FM (LPFM) stations to operate on channels third adjacent to full power FM stations.

Chairman Martin Proposes Revision to the Newspaper/Broadcast Cross-Ownership Rule

Chairman Kevin J. Martin proposes that the Commission conclude its review of the broadcast ownership rules by adopting the regulatory changes set forth in Attachment A. Chairman Martin proposes the Commission amend the 32-year-old absolute ban on newspaper/broadcast cross-ownership by crafting an approach that would allow a newspaper to own one television station or one radio station but only in the very largest markets and subject to certain criteria and limitations. Chairman Martin also proposes that the Commission make no changes to the other media ownership rules currently under review.

FCC Meeting Adopts Rules Favoring LPFM, Restricting Translator Applications

In an unusually contentious FCC meeting, the FCC adopted rules that promote Low Power FM ("LPFM") stations seemingly to the detriment of FM translators and improvements in the facilities of full-power FM stations.  While no formal text of the decision has yet been released, the Commission did release a Public Notice summarizing its action.  However, given the lack of detail contained in the Notice as to some of the decisions - including capping at 10 the number of translator applications from the 2003 FM translator window that one entity can continue to process and the adoption of an interim policy that would preclude the processing of full-power FM applications that created interference that could not be resolved to an existing LPFM station - it appears that the Press Release was written before these final details were determined.
