Supremes OK 'Fleeting Expletive' Rule Print E-mail

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court ruled narrowly Tuesday in favor of a government policy that threatens broadcasters with fines over the use of even a single curse word on live television, yet stopped short of deciding whether the policy violates the Constitution.

In six separate opinions totalling 68 pages, the justices signaled serious concerns about the constitutionality of the Federal Communications Commission's "fleeting expletives" policy, but called on a federal appeals court to weigh whether it violates First Amendment guarantees of free speech.

FCC chief: Don’t delay digital TV switch Print E-mail

The head of the Federal Communications Commission sharply disagreed Saturday with President-elect Barack Obama’s call to delay the scheduled switchover to all-digital television next month, warning that pushing back the transition would confuse Americans and put wireless companies at a significant disadvantage.

During a question-and-answer session at the International Consumer Electronics Show, the commission’s chairman, Kevin J. Martin, acknowledged that “ultimately, this is Congress’ decision.”  But “we’ve spent a lot of time and energy getting ready for the February 17 date,” he said. “I am concerned about the consumer confusion that would be created.”
